Class Notes

'70s
Wayne Nunnely, '75 BS Physical Education, is the defensive line coach with the New Orleans Saints. He served as UNLV's head football coach from 1986 through 1989. He also served as running back coach at the University of Southern California and as defensive line coach at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Robert Kurt Scherer, '77 BS Hotel Administration, is the president of Sugarloaf Toy Company of Sacramento. Previously, he worked for Westin International, Marriott, Americana Hotels, and Denny's Restaurants. He lives in Antelope, Calif.

Alan Kilker, '78 BS Hotel Administration, earned a master's degree in hotel and restaurant management from Florida International University and is now the director of sales at Doubletree's Paradise Valley Resort in Scottsdale, Ariz. Previously, he worked as sales manager at the Arizona Biltmore.

Nancy Oesterle, '78 BA Criminal Justice, is a judge in Las Vegas Justice Court. In 1994, she received the "Judge of the Year" award from the Nevada Judges Association. The following year she served as president of the association. She also produces and co-hosts the local television show Law for the Layman.


'80s
David D. Mancuso, '81 BS Hotel Administration, is owner and operator of Caesar's Limousine Service and is a tour operator in the Niagra Falls, Buffalo, and Rochester area of New York. He lives in Batavia.

Laura Hess, '85 BS Business Administration, is a partner with SPARCK International, a personal and professional development firm, for which she is a coach and corporate trainer.

Rolf H. Maile, '85 BS Hotel Administration, is a financial consultant with Merrill Lynch.

Christina L. Spencer, '85 BA Psychology, works as a library associate in the Horace Sturgis Library at Kennesaw State College in Georgia. Previously, she worked in the library at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany. While living in Germany she witnessed the Berlin Wall coming down. She lives in Acworth.

Rebecca Counts, '86 BS Business Administration, '88 MBA, is a divisional claim superintendent with State Farm Insurance Co.

Michael I. Loewy, '86 BA Sociology, is an assistant professor of counseling and school psychology in the community-based block program of the College of Education at San Diego State University. He earned both his master's degree and his doctoral degree in counseling psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Angela M. Andrich, '87 BA Chemistry, received her medical degree from the University of Nevada School of Medicine in 1991 and now practices general psychiatry in Lake Oswego, Ore. In 1995, she was voted exemplary psychiatrist by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.

Laurie Kalnin, '87 MBA, is a business development officer with Truckee River Bank's Small Business Administration loan production office in Las Vegas. Before joining the bank in 1994, she worked as executive director of the Southern Nevada Certified Development Company. She has also worked with the Nevada Institute for Contemporary Art, G&B Optics, and the Nevada Small Business Development Center at UNLV.


'90s
J.E. Coates Jr., '90 BS Biological Sciences, is an osteopath and is completing his general surgery residency at Garden City Hospital in Detroit. He graduated from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Iowa in 1995. He lives in Livonia.

James Meier, '90 MS Hotel Administration, is the controller at the Nevada Palace Hotel and Casino. He is a certified management accountant.

Jill C. Roberts, '90 BS Mathematical Sciences, is an ensign in the U.S. Navy assigned to the USS Thach, a guided-missile frigate based in Yokosuka, Japan. The Thach was assigned to help enforce the international embargo against Iraq in the Persian Gulf. Roberts is one of 230 crew members to win an anti-submarine warfare excellence award.

Mary L. Schramski, '90 Master of Education, is the author of the recently published book Love Letters: The Quintessential Reference to Writing and Enjoying Love Letters. She lives in Keller, Texas.

Chrissy Sessa, '90 BS Business Administration, is a production manager for Merica, Burch & Dickerson Advertising and Public Relations. She is also pursuing a master's degree in ethics and policy studies at UNLV. Previously, she worked at UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center as a corporate relations representative.

Larry Merle Ball, '91 BS Architecture and Construction Management, teaches heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration maintenance, repair, and installation at Southern Nevada Vocational Technical Center.

Karen Garberson, '91 BS Hotel Administration, is the assistant food and beverage director at the Anchorage (Alaska) Hilton. Previously, she worked at the Anaheim Hilton and Towers in California.

Patrik Hanson, '92 BS Hotel Administration, is self-employed. He works with companies to help them improve customer service. He also develops trade shows and takes part in the family business of designing and manufacturing children's clothes. He lives in Goteborg, Sweden.

Monika A. Martin, '92 MS Hotel Administration, is the merchandising manager of foodservice marketing for E&J Gallo Winery in Modesto, Calif. She lives in Riverbank.

Paul F. Wakefield, '92 BA Political Science, was recently commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy after completing Officer Candidate School at the Naval Aviation Schools Command at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla. He completed his training with distinction. He joined the Navy in 1992.

Vicki Burnette McCullough, '93 BA Art, works as a sales consultant for Armstrong McCall Beauty Supply Distributors. Her husband, Steven McCullough, '91 BS Civil Engineering, is a staff engineer for Dames & Moore Engineering. They live in San Diego.

Jason Medlock, '94 BA Communication Studies, is a professional football player with the Calgary (Canada) Stampeders. In the off-season he works as a freelancer in television production for J.C. Penney Corp. in Dallas. His home is in Dallas.

Koji Shimozaki, '94 BS Business Administration, works in sales for International Digital Communications Inc., a telecommunications company in Japan. He lives in Tokyo.

Deborah Smith, '94 BA Political Science, is an advertising customer service representative for What's On in Las Vegas magazine. She coordinates advertising accounts and serves as a liaison in customer relations. Previously, she worked as an intern for Rep. John Ensign, R-Nev., in his Washington, D.C. office.

Sascha Tillmanns, '94 BS Hotel Administration, is a corporate trainee with Hyatt International Corp. in Germany at the Hyatt Regency - Cologne. He lives in Berlin.

Suzanne Ivy, '95 BS Business Administration, worked as an accounting manager for Learning is Fun before taking a leave of absence to pursue an MBA at Vanderbilt University. She is the daughter of Charles Ivy, '68 BS Biology, and Carol James Ivy, '68 BS Biology, '69 MS Biology.
