1980s

David Cooley, ’81 BS Hotel Administration, is the proprietor of Abbey Food and Bar in West Hollywood, Calif., which was recently named by Zagat Survey as one of the hottest spots for nightlife in Los Angeles. The Ambassador Council of AIDS Project Los Angeles honored him last year for his longstanding creative support and commitment to the organization and the community. His other charitable endeavors include Toys for Tots, Aid for AIDS, South African Families and People with AIDS, and Gay & Lesbian Elder Housing.

Mark Ayers, ’82 BS Business Administration, is a fire division supervisor for the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards & Training. He earned an MPA from City University and graduated from the executive fire officer program at the National Fire Academy. His hobbies include watching sporting events, taking long walks, and reading. He and his wife of 28 years, Terri, have two children and one grandchild. They live in Salem.

Michael Loewy, ’86 BA Sociology, was awarded tenure at the University of North Dakota, where he is an associate professor of counseling and chair of its counseling department. He arrived at UND in 2002 as director of training for the doctoral program in counseling psychology. His primary research emphasis is multicultural competence. His passion is working for social justice and serving the underserved and underrepresented. He previously taught at San Diego State University and the University of Missouri, Columbia. He earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
