Class Notes

'70s

Larry Adams, '70 BS Hotel Administration, has been elected to the board of governors for the Institute of Internal Auditors Inc. He has earned professional certifications as a certified fraud examiner, certified public accountant, certified internal auditor, certified information systems auditor, certified computing professional, certified quality analyst, and certified systems professional. He lives in Phoenix.

Gary W. Brown, '73 BS Hotel Administration, is general manager at the Rocky Gap Lodge & Golf Resort near Cumberland, Md. The resort, which includes an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-signature golf course, is being built within Rocky Gap State Park. Brown received the 1997 "fellows" designation from the American Society of Association Executives - one of the highest honors that the association bestows upon its members. He is one of only 32 people in the nation to receive the award since 1992. Before joining Rocky Gap, Brown served as the president of G.W. Brown Hotel Sales & Marketing Services, a Virginia-based hotel consulting firm.

Carol J. Bontrager Wagers, '77 BS Education, '81 MS Counseling and Educational Psychology, is a counselor at Green Valley High School. An avid needlepoint stitcher, she was selected in 1996 to stitch a needlepoint stocking for the Christmas tree in the Blue Room of the White House. Three stitchers were selected from each state. She also is the keyboard player for the praise band at University United Methodist Church.


'80s

Kent Gerlach, '80 EdD Special Education, is a professor of special education at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash. He received the University Faculty Excellence Award for the 1995-96 academic year - one of two such awards given annually to honor the university's finest faculty. He has worked with the U.S. Department of Education as an adviser to the Clinton administration. At both the state and national levels, he offers his expertise to help draft legislation to increase support for children with special needs and for paraprofessionals in the school system. He is co-editor of the book, Supervising Paraeducators in School Settings: A Team Approach. He lives in Seattle.

William C. Gallagher, '81 BS Business Administration, who became a New York Life agent in Las Vegas following graduation, is now the company's managing partner in central Florida. He is responsible for all company sales operations in the region. He is married to Debra Wallace Gallagher, '81 BA Education, '89 MEd. They live in Orlando.

Sevda K. Aleckson, '82 BA Chemistry, is the western regional quality assurance director for Quanterra Environmental Services. She lives in Irvine, Calif.

Ronald Arthur Moss, '83 BS Hotel Administration, is general manager of the Planet Hollywood in Hong Kong and the Planet Hollywood in Guam. He lives in Hong Kong.

Mike Mullin, '83 BS Business Administration, works in management information systems support for Quebecor Printing, the second largest directory printer in North America. He also has worked in customer service and as an industrial maintenance mechanic. He lives in Hazleton, Penn.

Julie Hall, '89 BA Math, is a Geographic Information System analyst with Clark County's public works department. She is a team leader for a conversion project for drainage facilities throughout the Las Vegas Valley. She joined the county in 1989 as an engineer technician in the flood control division.

Marguet Miller, '89 BS Business Administration, is a professor of physical education and an assistant football coach at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. Before moving to Mount San Antonio, he was the tight-end coach at California State University, Fresno.


'90s

Mary L. Greene, '90 MEd Instructional and Curricular Studies, is a GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) specialist for the Clark County School District. She currently works at Kim Elementary School where she teaches gifted students in grades three through five and provides enrichment education for students in grades one and two. She is working on a doctoral degree in special education at UNLV.

Laura Fadgen, '92 BS Hotel Administration, is the owner of Beyond Words, a resume, typing, and office-support service.

Alexander K. Marquez, '92 BS Electrical Engineering, received an MBA from Purdue University in 1993. He now works as a senior financial analyst at Intel Corp. in Santa Clara, Calif.

Gloria D. Peterson, '92 MEd Educational Administration and Higher Education, is principal of Southport Elementary School in Kenosha, Wisc. She initiated an extended-day kindergarten program and a math, science, and reading enrichment team at the school. The enrichment team is the first of its kind in Kenosha. Previously, she served as principal of Kenosha's Durkee Elementary School.

Sergio A. Verduzco, '92 BS Hotel Administration, is the executive chef of the Eagles Bar & Grille in Telluride, Colo. He previously worked as the banquet chef at the Four Seasons Hotel in Mexico City; as the executive chef at the Bel Air Hotel in Costa Careyes, Mexico; and as the chef de cuisine at The Peaks Resort in Colorado.

Angela White, '92 BS Education, earned a master's degree in reading education at Arizona State University in 1994. She teaches at Rowe Elementary School in Las Vegas and was nominated for New Teacher of the Year in 1994. She has completed real estate school at the Southern Nevada School of Real Estate. She is currently working on a doctoral degree at UNLV.

Tom Robinson, '93 MA Communication Studies, is an assistant professor at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. He teaches advertising. He received a doctoral degree in mass communication from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1996.

Cynthia A. Williams, '93 BS Nursing, is an R.N. health care coordinator with Tri West Healthcare Alliance. The company coordinates the military health care at the Nellis Air Force Base Hospital. Previously, she was the administrator of Absolute Home Health Care in Las Vegas. She was the 1996 runner-up for the March of Dimes Nurse-of-the-Year award in the area of community health.

Mark S. Katz, '94 BS Business Administration, was admitted to the Nevada Bar in 1997. He has joined the law firm of Berkley and Gordon. He plans to focus his efforts on taxation, estate planning, and corporate and commercial law. He earned his law degree from Suffolk University Law School in Boston in 1997. In May, he is scheduled to graduate from Boston University with a master's of law and letters in taxation.

James Embree, '95 BA Communication Studies, is a public relations coordinator for The Firm Public Relations & Marketing. Previously, he worked in the advertising and public relations office of the Gold Strike/Nevada Landing properties in Jean. In 1995, he served an internship in the Washington, D.C., office of then-U.S. Rep. Barbara Vucanovich.

Francis J. Rodgers, '96 MEd Special Education, was honored as the Clark County School District's New Teacher of the Year in special education in 1997. He is a resource room teacher at Bruner Elementary School. He teaches fourth- and fifth-grade students with learning disabilities.

Jolene Mitchell, '97 BS Education, teaches in a combined first- and second-grade classroom at Taylor Elementary School in Henderson. In May 1997 while she was a student teacher at Taylor, her work was featured in Teaching K-8, a magazine for professional educators. Her lesson on "word dinosaurs" was selected as one of the publication's "blue ribbon ideas." When teaching the book Tyrone the Horrible, a book about a dinosaur, she dresses in a safari outfit and takes her reading students outside to search for clues in a special "hunt" that emphasizes using descriptive words. At the end of the hunt, students return to the classroom and find gummy dinosaurs waiting for them.
