Class Notes

'60s

Douglas Crosby, '66 BS Business Administration, is a partner in the law firm of Jones Vargas. He earned his law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco in 1969. Today, his primary areas of practice are corporate, gaming, and general business law. He also owns a cruise-only specialty travel agency, Cruise Holidays of Las Vegas, which has two offices in Southern Nevada.


'70s

Obie P. Amacker Jr., '75 BS Business Administration, has been elected president of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management, an international professional and technical society that has chapters in the United States, Russia, Austria, Japan, and Korea. He works as manager of safeguards and security technology at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash.

Mark McKinley, '75 BA Sociology, is vice president of the Las Vegas-based insurance firm of Cragin & Pike. He has been elected president of the Nevada Independent Insurance Agents, the largest insurance trade organization in the state. McKinley has been in the insurance business for more than 20 years and is a chartered property casualty underwriter. He serves on the board of directors of Candlelighters, an organization that aids children with cancer.

Dick Johnson, '77 BS Business Administration, is president of Time Warner Cablevision of Shreveport (La.). He has been with Time Warner since 1981 and previously served as area manager for the Wisconsin and Illinois systems in the companyÍs national division. In 1993, he received the Andrew Heiskell Award, the companyÍs highest employee award for volunteerism and contribution to the community. He was recognized for initiating a successful midnight basketball program designed to get the inner-city youths of Beloit, Wisc., off the streets during prime crime time.


'80s

John S. McClenahan, '81 BS Hotel Administration, is semi-retired and doing volunteer work as "Doctor Magic" at Sunrise Children's Hospital and University Medical Center. He performs magic, makes balloon faces, and entertains in the children's and oncology wards. He also performs for civic groups, adult care facilities, and charity organizations.

Peter Bonate, '86 BA Chemistry, and his wife, Diana Bonate, '87 BA Psychology, announce the birth of their twins, Ryan and Robyn, on Sept. 12, 1998. Peter is employed as a clinical scientist in drug development at Hoechst Marion Roussel. He earned a doctoral degree in psycho-pharmacology from Indiana University. Diana is a psychologist for Network Rehabilitation Services. She earned a doctoral degree in psychology from Indiana State University. They live in Shawnee, Kan.

Carmen Zayas, '87 BA Communication Studies, is vice president of human resources for Clean Cut Inc., a landscape design and maintenance company based in Austin, Texas. She has directed Clean Cut's human re-sources department for the past seven years. Previously, she worked as a reporter for the Mohave Daily Miner in Kingman, Ariz. Her affiliations include the Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Austin Adopt-a-School. She lives in Cedar Park.

Kimberly McDonald, '88 BA Psychology, '96 Master of Public Administration, was elected vice president of the American Business Women's Association for 1998-99, which involves representing businesswomen in 13 Western states. Previously, she received an award as one of the association's 1997-98 Top Ten Businesswomen. She works for the city of North Las Vegas as its public information officer and as a management analyst in the city's special affairs division. In 1996, she was honored with the Nevada Women's Role Model Award.

Allison Copening, '89 BA Communication Studies, recently opened AliKat Creative Services, a company specializing in public relations, video production, and special events. Previously, she worked as marketing director of Purchase Pro Inc. She also serves as a trustee of the Desert Research Institute Foundation and on the statewide board of directors of Kids Voting USA.

Kurt A. Goebel, '89 MS Geoscience, has been promoted to the position of senior geologist at Converse Consultants, where he has worked since 1991. He serves as a senior project manager responsible for technical quality, project staffing, and business development. He is a Nevada certified environmental manager and registered hazardous substance professional. His project experience includes regulatory compliance, hazardous waste characterization, waste minimization, and water resource management.

Edward H. Jensen, '89 BA Criminal Justice, earned a master's degree in pastoral ministries with an emphasis in grief issues from St. Mary's University of Minnesota in 1998. He works for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department as director of the police employees' assistance program. He administers after-crisis care to police and emergency service personnel.


'90s

Thomas J. Heider, '90 BS Civil Engineering and Bachelor of Fine Arts, works as an engineering technician II in the land development area of the city of Las Vegas' public works department. He began work there as a student engineer while still attending UNLV. In his free time he draws and paints and has entered several community exhibits and contests.

Hank Hope, '93 BA Communication Studies, is broadcast production manager at Shonkwiler-Marcoux Advertising. He produces television, video, and radio spots for clients such as the Stratosphere and Showboat hotels. He oversees internal tracking of broadcast projects for his agency. Previously, he worked in broadcast production for R&R Advertising.

Jason Cleary, '94 BS Business Administration, is pursuing an MBA degree at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business. He earned his certified public accountant designation while working at the Arthur Andersen accounting firm. He then earned his certified management accountant designation while working at the MGM Grand. Later, he joined the Peace Corps and was sent to the Ukraine as an advanced business consultant. After returning, he served as the director of internal audit at the Gold River Resort in Laughlin.

Erin Duffy, '94 BS Hotel Administration, has joined Finan Publishing Co. Inc. as show manager/publications coordinator. She will handle all administrative details related to STL Construct/Mart, the premiere construction equipment and tool exhibition in St. Louis. She will also work with show and event activities involving the company's four magazines, St. Louis Construction News & Review, Club Management, Painting and Wallcovering Contractor, and Resort Management & Operations. She lives in Ballwin, Mo.

Begüm Özel, '94 BS Math, received her medical degree from the University of Southern California in 1998. She is now doing residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. While in medical school, she was recognized by USC's division of student affairs for her contributions in the areas of leadership and service.

Archie Perry, '94 BS Biology, graduated from the University of Nevada School of Medicine in 1998 where he was named "Regent Scholar" by the Board of Regents of the University and Community College System of Nevada. Next, he will be training in orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

Rachel S. Black, '96 MS Counseling and Educational Psychology, is attending law school at Cornell University and is an editor on the Cornell Law Review. Later this year she will begin a one-year appointment as a judicial clerk for U.S. District Court Chief Judge Alan Kay in Honolulu. She lives in Ithaca, N.Y.

Wendy Carlin, '96 BA Political Sci-ence, is teaching English as a foreign language in Hsinchu, Taiwan, with the Hess Language Organization.

Allan Pearlstein, '96 MA Communication Studies, is a social insurance specialist with the Social Security Administration in Scottsdale, Ariz. He is responsible for taking and adjudicating all types of retirement, survivor, and disability applications. He lives in Chandler.

Wallace William Hammons, '97 BA Political Science and Criminal Justice, is studying law at Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles. He lives in Redondo Beach.

Lee R. Hocking, '97 BA Communication Studies, is in his second year of law school at the University of Tulsa. Last summer he worked as a law clerk at the law firm of Pyatt & Silvestri.
